Ever since watching It Takes Two as a tween I have wanted to have sloppy joes. I just loved that scene when tomboy Amanda takes that nice gooey burger into her hands and takes a huge bite, getting it all over her face. I wanted to be just as rebellious and cool as her. However, my mother never agreed to make them for me as she said they looked gross, true. So I had to wait 10years before having my very own Sloppy Joe, vegan style!
I used the recipe from Julie Hasson’s Vegan Diner and added in a little personal twist. It was very simple and fast to make. With the TVP I added in some lentils too. I think some diced carrots would have been a good addition too. I like the variety of textures. For the mushrooms I just used some canned mushrooms I had, but I think fresh mushrooms would have added much more favor. I like Julie’s choice of spices; cumin and paprika. I replaced the garlic powder with onion powder, just because I am not a huge garlic fan. And sadly I didn’t have any liquid smoke.
It was very simple to make this recipe and the sloppy joes turned out to be very tasty, a little spicy and definitely with that ‘junk food’ feel. I warmed up some buns in the oven and just added fresh salad and ketchup to them. For sides we put some fries in the frier to really have that junk experience!
I unfortunately wasn’t brave enough to eat like Amanda and instead used a knife and fork!
KEEP THE NAPKINS NEAR!
